How to Get Ready for Real ID License Deadline May 2023

The Real ID Act sets new requirements for state driver’s licenses and identification cards. If you plan to fly within the United States or enter certain federal facilities on or after May 3rd, 2023, you will need a REAL ID-compliant card. REAL ID-compliant cards are marked with a star in the upper right corner. Many states have started issuing these cards. If your state does not yet issue them, you can get/use a passport instead.

What is Real ID?

On May 2023, every US air traveler will need a Real ID-compliant license or passport to fly. Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming deadline.

The Real ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The act sets minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. If you have a license from a state that is compliant with the Real ID Act, it will have a star in the upper right-hand corner.

Why do I need Real ID?

Despite some initial delays, the final deadline for Real ID implementation approaches. Many Americans are wondering what Real ID is and if they need it. Real ID is a new form of identification that will be required for boarding domestic flights and accessing certain federal facilities starting in May 3rd, 2023. Here’s what you need to know about Real ID and why you may need to get one. With the implementation of the Real ID Act in May 2016, new identification cards began to be issued to Americans according to New York Department of Motor Vehicle.

How to get a Real ID

The clock is ticking on the deadline to get a Real ID license. Getting a Real ID is not as simple as just getting a new driver’s license—residents need to provide proof of identity, Social Security number, and residency in order to get one. To meet the requirements, residents must visit a DMV before their current driver’s license expires.

In order to get a Real ID, residents need to visit their DMV and bring:

  • proof of identity (e.g., a birth certificate)
  • Social Security card
  • two proofs of residency (e.g. utility bills), and
  • proof of name change (if applicable).

What to do if you can’t get a Real ID

As the deadline for Real ID compliance looms, many Americans are scrambling to get their documents in order. But what happens if you can’t get a Real ID?

There are a few options available to you. You can apply for a passport, which will allow you to travel both domestically and internationally. You can also apply for an enhanced driver’s license, which is available in some states and allows for domestic travel only. Finally, you can renew and/or obtain a standard driver’s license. This will not allow you to board a domestic flight, but will still be valid for driving and other identification purposes.

The Time is Now

The Real ID Act deadline is May 2023, and Americans need to be prepared. If you want to know if you have a REAL ID-compliant card, check your state’s DMV website. Whatever option you choose, make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get your documents in order. The last thing you want is to be stuck at the airport without a valid form of identification!
